Stoughton School Committee Reluctantly Approves $69.2 Million FY27 Budget

STOUGHTON — May 26, 2026 — Stoughton School Committee approves a $69.2 million FY27 budget it called inadequate, then accepts a $400,000 private gift. The committee voted 4-0 Monday to adopt the $69,245,872 spending plan set by Town Meeting — more than $3.1 million below the district's $73,077,362 request — after outgoing Superintendent Dr. Joseph Baeta warned that failing to vote would bar all personnel from school buildings on July 1. "I'm disgusted by the whole process," said one first-year member before voting yes. Business Manager Heidi told the board unemployment costs from the resulting layoffs could reach $50,000 per month, well above the $150,000 budgeted for the year. Seven speakers, including four current and former students, pleaded during public comment to save the BRITE mental health program at the high school, which has been cut; Baeta said he would explore options with superintendent-elect Julie Miller. On a brighter note, the committee unanimously accepted a $400,000 donation from Dr. Robert Lanza, SHS class of 1974, to create the Griffin and O'Donnell Bridge Fund, which will support teachers, guidance counselors, and students in need.
